The Garden Club Has a Long History of Giving

    • On a Wednesday, October 28, 1921 Mrs. Frederick Wheeler invited eleven women to her home for a luncheon. After the meal, Mrs. Wheeler announced the object of the meeting to be the formation of a Garden Club. The Garden Club of Palo Alto, as conceived by those founding members, was to be more than just a club in which to exchange garden and artistic ideas. The betterment of the surrounding community was also a goal. Dues were collected in 1923 and a very successful flower exhibit and sale took place in 1924.
    • Proceeds from the Flower Exhibit and sale were used to make the Garden Club’s first grant, to the City of Palo Alto Library to purchase gardening books that could be used by the entire community.
    • The Garden Club of Palo Alto continues to raise money, and every year since 1924, has made grants to the community. In 1965 the Club established a charitable trust whose purpose is to receive funds and disburse them in the form of grants for projects in gardening, nature study and horticulture, conservation of natural resources, and beautification of public areas.
